Program note (English)

Swirls and Shades (2019)
for eight saxophones and objects (2019).

Slowly undulating, floating with certain inertia… I imagined myself a sort of underwater music, which sometimes rises above the surface and whirls up in the air. It’s a slow-moving piece of music, characterized by vibrations and motions. The pitch material is based on the frequency analysis of two multiphonics in the alto saxophone, and electronic modulations of those.

Swirls and Shades was composed specifically for Stockholm Saxophone Quartet and Quasar Quatuor de saxophones.

Premiere at Amphitheatre of the GESÙ, Montréal, November 2019.
