Whirli(gigue)

for large symphony orchestra

Whirli(gigue) (2017), a swirling dance which originates from ring modulated multiphonics, was commissioned by Swedish Radio P2 for Malmö Symphony Orchestra. It is a seven minute long concert opener, the word “overture” was mentioned along with the commission.

Whirli(gigue) – orkestral klangpoesi
Öppningstakterna i Jenny Hettnes beställningsverk från Sveriges
Radio, Whirli(gigue) som idag får sitt uruppförande, glittrar och
glimmar i det höga registret. Piccolo, flöjt, xylofon, glockenspiel,
harpa och violiner formar den ljusa, skira och nästan översinnliga
klangfärgen i verkets inledning. Allt fler instrument tillkommer
och breddar efterhand instrumentationen mot ett klangligt
djup. Så bryts plötsligt ljudbilden och styckets tematiska material
presenteras av oboen i fem efter varandra följande “ackord”,
så kallade multiphonics, en övertonsrik dissonant klang där
flera toner klingar samtidigt. Musiken som följer rör sig mot
tystnaden och det tonhöjdslösa innan inledningens cirklande
melodiska rörelser återkommer, men nu förändrade och mer
expressionistiska. Ett verk med en subtil orkestral klangpoesi som
gränsar till den elektroakustiska musikens fascinerande värld.
